A long spiked tail, big wings and a powerful blaze coming from it's mouth are the main characteristics of a traditional dragon. All of them featured in this detailed carved wood handicraft.
Alebrijes are fantastic creatures that emerge only from the artisan dreams. A colorful mix of living beings; these wood carving sculptures are handmade from copal wood. Alebrijes were first created in the 1930s when Pedro Linares, an indigenous artisan from Oaxaca, began to hallucinate due to a very severe fever. He dreamt of strangely colored creatures in a forest. Alebrijes were first created using papier-mâché and card board but later evolved to being hand carved in copal wood. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo encouraged Linares to handcraft more Alebrijes for them. Today alebrijes are traditionally handmade in Oaxaca in the towns of San Antonio Arrazola and San Martin Tilcajete, and have become very appreciated worldwide because of their vibrant colors and uniqueness of the designs.
